Carve SmallHand carving at a small bench

Hand carving, at the size of a kitchen table

Carving does not need a workshop. It needs a block, three tools and somewhere to put the shavings. These guides cover the part nobody explains: how the wood actually behaves under the blade, and what to do when it stops cooperating.

What this site covers

Everything here is written for hand tools and small work — pieces you can hold in one palm, made at a table you also eat at. There is no machinery, no dust extraction and no assumption that you own a bench vice.

The guides are grouped roughly in the order they become useful. Material first, because most early frustration is a material problem; then the strokes; then the edge, which is what separates a pleasant hour from a discouraging one.
